But there\u2019s one piece of the puzzle that often gets overblown when people discuss the ramifications of these cars potentially being sold in the United States someday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/764711\/byd-seagull-one-million-sales\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22764711%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22byd-seagull-one-million-sales%22%7D\">That $10,000 BYD you keep hearing about<\/a>? Here in the U.S., there\u2019s zero chance it would be so astonishingly cheap, for better or worse. There are a few reasons for that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>EV prices have fallen in China partially due to a <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/717977\/china-byd-ev-sales-struggling\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22717977%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22china-byd-ev-sales-struggling%22%7D\">brutal price war<\/a> that is widely seen as unsustainable. Chinese cars sold in the U.S. would also need to meet different safety standards, which would hike up costs. Today, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/719530\/biden-chinese-ev-tariff\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22719530%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22biden-chinese-ev-tariff%22%7D\">imposes duties of over 100%<\/a> on Chinese-made cars in what amounts to an effective ban. The federal government\u2019s line is that China\u2019s lavish government subsidies have created far too much car-building capacity, and that it\u2019s not America\u2019s job to let artificially cheap imports steamroll into town.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to imagine those walls coming down in a major way anytime soon. And, for car companies that sell in America, it\u2019s a lifesaver to avoid competing with cars that cost half or a third as much. But that doesn\u2019t mean Ford, General Motors and the rest are out of the woods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/features\/769498\/rivian-ceo-r2-evs-interview\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22769498%22%2C%22section%22%3A%223%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22rivian-ceo-r2-evs-interview%22%7D\">we interviewed Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/insideevspodcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Plugged-In Podcast<\/a>\u00a0a few weeks ago, I asked him about the threat of China\u2019s EVs coming to America, and whether he and his rivals should be preparing for that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"video\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sizer\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAJCAYAAAA7KqwyAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAABpJREFUeNpi\/P\/\/PwMlgImBQjBqwLAwACDAAOVfAw9\/ZDvcAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><iframe allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-u94GAmyWWg?si=joTn_P1s1b4buLKh\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" loading=\"lazy\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>\u201cI think everyone should be planning for that and designing [their] technology stack around that,\u201d he said. But the fixation on cost is all wrong, he argues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s alarming, if you\u2019re looking at the whole industry, is that the technology is much better,\u201d he said, referring to China\u2019s EV industry. \u201cIf I was an existing manufacturer, I\u2019d get less hung up on the cost and more focused on \u2018the cars are actually better.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the key phrase here: &#8220;the cars are actually better.&#8221; Whether China&#8217;s automakers got ahead thanks to government investments or labor costs or leveraging Western IP doesn&#8217;t matter now\u2014it&#8217;s a question of product vs. product.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While much of the Western auto world has been talking a big game about making \u201csmartphones on wheels\u201d for years, China is already there. They have underlying architectures that often share more with the consumer electronics world than with clunky, old-school automotive systems. That means frequent and substantial software updates over time, similar to what Tesla and Rivian also do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chinese firms can also develop new models in months, rather than years. Some EVs can <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/758625\/byd-megawatt-charging-demo-china\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22758625%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22byd-megawatt-charging-demo-china%22%7D\">charge at incredibly high rates<\/a>. On top of all that, many outsiders have said they\u2019re built just as solidly as German luxury cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The best poster child for the industry may be the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/reviews\/720158\/xiaomi-su7-wheelsboy-review-china\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22720158%22%2C%22section%22%3A%222%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22xiaomi-su7-wheelsboy-review-china%22%7D\">Xiaomi SU7<\/a>, a sleek, Porsche-fighting premium sedan that Scaringe called \u201can impressively well-done vehicle\u201d\u2014high praise for Xiaomi\u2019s first-ever car. So those cost advantages largely evaporate once a firm is forced to make cars somewhere else. Moreover, if trade barriers were to magically disappear, then what would stop U.S. companies from leveraging those lower Chinese manufacturing costs, too?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no magic sauce happening in China that\u2019s allowing the cars to be built easier,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have a whole series of things that just lead to an overall lower cost base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of that is why, Scaringe says, car companies should focus on beefing up their products and technology\u2014not just worrying about cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho knows? In the fullness of time, I do think Chinese manufacturers may start building here.
