This week at IAA Munich, Europe&#8217;s biggest auto expo, the automaker said it completed development of its &#8220;unified cell&#8221; and laid out a roadmap for the technology&#8217;s future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind the standardized cell is to unlock super-sized economies of scale around one of the most crucial EV components, VW executives explained at the show. That&#8217;s critical, because almost no manufacturers besides Tesla have managed to turn a profit on their electric cars\u2014largely because they&#8217;ve been crushed by high battery costs and limited production scale. Carmakers in Europe in particular need to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/771833\/europe-iaa-fossil-fuel-ban-2035-evs\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771833%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22europe-iaa-fossil-fuel-ban-2035-evs%22%7D\">escalating emissions rules<\/a> and combat an <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/771756\/byd-iaa-megawatt-europe-seal\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771756%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22byd-iaa-megawatt-europe-seal%22%7D\">influx of high-quality, highly subsidized Chinese offerings<\/a> too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section data-is-mosaic=\"0\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"image\" data-border=\"\" data-id=\"8250335\" readability=\"1\">\n        <span class=\"svg-search\"><br \/>\n            <svg>\n                <use xlink:href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/design\/dist\/critical\/icons\/sprite-common-0-1de6c82323269ad4e75a31f5f21e741f.svg#semidir\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n        <\/span>\n    <picture><source type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"&#10; at its factory in Salzgitter, Germany and ramp up next year, PowerCo CEO Frank Blome said during a presentation. Production will follow at plants in Spain and Canada in 2026 and 2027, respectively, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cell will power up to 80% of the VW Group&#8217;s EV models from 2030 and extend to all brands, the company said.\u00a0That means variations of it will be found in everything from Volkswagens and \u0160kodas to Porsches and Audis. And they&#8217;ll go into vehicles sold across the U.S., China and Europe. Notably, Porsche recently <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/770046\/porsche-cancels-ev-battery-manufacturing-plans\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22770046%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22porsche-cancels-ev-battery-manufacturing-plans%22%7D\">scrapped<\/a> its own in-house battery manufacturing project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The basic idea for us is to standardize things wherever possible. Those include the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/771042\/volkswagen-id-polo-gti-name\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771042%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22volkswagen-id-polo-gti-name%22%7D\">Volkswagen ID. Polo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/771445\/volkswagen-id-cross-concept-iaa\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771445%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22volkswagen-id-cross-concept-iaa%22%7D\">ID. Cross<\/a>, along with the Cupra Raval hatchback.<\/p>\n<p>VW says the unified cell will deliver a driving range of up to 450 kilometers (279 miles) in those cars. It says the cell demonstrates a volumetric energy density of 660 watt-hours per liter, a 10% improvement over VW&#8217;s previous cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, though, range and other specs will vary from vehicle to vehicle. VW says the cell can be adapted to different dimensions and can work in large and small vehicles. Soon, PowerCo will start manufacturing cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells too, which are taking off globally because of their low cost and durability over years of charging.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Technologically speaking we&#8217;re still at the very beginning,&#8221; Blome said, through a translator. &#8220;So we&#8217;re going to first have NMC, then LFP, then sodium and solid-state is also in the pipeline. It&#8217;s included in the development roadmap, and we&#8217;re also talking about further architectures and cell chemistries that we&#8217;ve started to work on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>VW will start producing LFP unified cells at a factory in Valencia, Spain, in 2027. <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/771402\/every-solid-state-battery-ev\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771402%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22every-solid-state-battery-ev%22%7D\">Solid-state batteries<\/a> are likely farther off, as no company has successfully commercialized this holy grail battery technology. However, at IAA, Volkswagen rolled out its first demonstration vehicle with solid-state battery tech, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rideapart.com\/news\/771717\/ducati-v21l-electric-motorcycle-solid-state-battery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ducati motorcycle with cells from VW-backed QuantumScape<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"widget-newsletter\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"widget-newsletter\" readability=\"-19.894736842105\">\n<\/section>\n<p>Executives said they chose the prismatic form factor\u2014a rectangular box rather than a cylinder or flexible pouch\u2014so that it could accommodate different chemistries over time. The shape is key in another way, too. The cheaper-to-build, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/768632\/ford-midsize-ev-pickup-battery\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22768632%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22ford-midsize-ev-pickup-battery%22%7D\">overhauled EV platform that Ford announced<\/a> in August uses prismatic cells integrated directly into a pack as well. The <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/769602\/rivian-ceo-ev-battery-lfp\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22769602%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22rivian-ceo-ev-battery-lfp%22%7D\">Rivian R2<\/a> eliminates the modules found in its R1 series. General Motors bet big on a scalable battery platform called Ultium, based on battery packs with different configurations of standardized modules. Now it&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/736598\/gm-to-dump-ultium-brand-name\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22736598%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22gm-to-dump-ultium-brand-name%22%7D\">looking into prismatic cells<\/a> that can eliminate battery substructures and reduce the number of modules.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen won&#8217;t take on the brunt of manufacturing all on its own. The company said it plans to offload about 50% of cell production to suppliers, which, according to a presentation attended by <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.de\/photos\/912025\/vw-technik-workshop-auf-der-iaa-2025\/#8248489_vw-technik-workshop-auf-der-iaa-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">InsideEVs Germany<\/a>, include Gotion, CATL, Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cells aren&#8217;t just for cars, either. They will also go into stationary battery banks built by Elli, VW&#8217;s new energy storage company.
