Cross.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Volkswagen&#8217;s top brass has come to the same conclusion as just about every single person trying to open a Tesla door for the first time: Flush door handles may look sweet, but they often suck in practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the IAA Mobility show in Munich, Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Sch\u00e4fer told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_b4LVs7BIbU\"><em>Deutsche Welle<\/em><\/a> that the automaker has received quite a bit of feedback regarding flush-mounted door handles. The verdict? VW itself has said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/770676\/vw-more-likeable-evs-promise\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22770676%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22vw-more-likeable-evs-promise%22%7D\">industry has been laser-focused on designing battery-powered cars to appease early adopters<\/a>, and that this would need to change to <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/771445\/volkswagen-id-cross-concept-iaa\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771445%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22volkswagen-id-cross-concept-iaa%22%7D\">further market penetration for more average consumers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why VW won&#8217;t be playing find the button any longer\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/752840\/vw-brings-back-buttons-switches\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22752840%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22vw-brings-back-buttons-switches%22%7D\">inside of the car<\/a>\u00a0or out. Instead, the brand promises to give the consumers what they want.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People expect some sort of familiarity with the vehicle, with the brand, that they are buying into,&#8221; Sch\u00e4fer told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_b4LVs7BIbU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>DW<\/em><\/a>, when asked if there&#8217;s a concerted effort within VW to make its EVs familiar to buyers. &#8220;Functions have to be easy, like door handles, for example.\u00a0It\u2019s all nice to have these flush door handles, but they are terrible to operate. So we definitely have proper door handles on the cars and customers appreciate it. Every1 concept<\/a> that VW trotted out earlier this year does sport hidden, recessed door handles. But the near-production designs of the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/features\/771608\/volkswagen-headed-in-the-right-direction\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22771608%22%2C%22section%22%3A%223%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22volkswagen-headed-in-the-right-direction%22%7D\">ID. Polo and ID. Cross<\/a> that it showed at IAA had more conventional grab handles. (The ID.4 crossover sold in America never went full-blown hidden, but the handles aren&#8217;t exactly typical either.)<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Sch\u00e4fer recognizes that the Volkswagen brand has made some missteps in recent years. He said he came in as CEO a few years ago with a mission to &#8220;make true Volkswagens again.&#8221; To him, that means adding more buttons and making the infotainment system easier to use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0about design, it&#8217;s about quality, it&#8217;s about intuitive operation\u2014buttons on the steering wheel and so on,&#8221; he told the outlet. Automakers are quick to point out that flush door handles mean a lower overall drag coefficient, something quite important in an EV where range is a key selling point. Fewer protruding features mean a sleeker car that can cut through air with less resistance.<\/p>\n<p>But as <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/cars\/2025\/09\/flush-door-handles-are-the-car-industrys-latest-safety-problem\/\"><em>ArsTechnica<\/em><\/a> points out, shaving down the door handles to be flush with the body only increases the overall range of EVs by around one mile.
