Munich sells everything from a compact hatchback to a full-size SUV, without neglecting its core sedan and SUV models. The 8 Series Convertible and Z4 are dying, but the 4 Series Convertible will carry the torch in the open-top segment.<\/p>\n<p>While wagons have historically been Euro-centric products, BMW\u2019s M division is seeing growing interest in Tourings elsewhere. It has already gone on record saying it\u2019s surprised by the M5 Touring\u2019s popularity in the United States. That has made us wonder whether skipping the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2025\/11\/03\/bmw-why-america-gets-m5-touring-but-no-m3-touring\/\">M3 Touring<\/a> was a missed opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Australia is privileged to get both the G81 and the G99, and these M-flavored estate models are gaining traction locally. M boss Frank van Meel told Australian media he\u2019s \u201ca little bit surprised\u201d by how well the M3 and M5 Tourings are performing Down Under. Speaking with <em>Drive<\/em> magazine and other outlets, the head of BMW M pointed to a shift in customer preferences and explained why the company hadn\u2019t expected long-roof M cars to perform as they have:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-503936\" title=\"BMW M5 TOURING BRIGHT RED 00\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00-830x553.jpg\" alt=\"BMW M5 TOURING BRIGHT RED 00\" width=\"830\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00-830x553.jpg 830w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bmw-m5-touring-bright-red-00.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p>\u201cBecause over the past decades, every time we asked, \u2018do you want a Touring model?\u2019, the answer was always \u2018no, we don\u2019t want that in our market. We are an SUV market, or we are a sedan market.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Looking at the numbers, BMW Australia sold 270 M3 Touring units in 2025, while 53 customers opted for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2026\/02\/26\/2028-bmw-m5-touring-interior-spy-photos\/\">larger sibling<\/a>. In both cases, the wagon\u2019s share of total demand exceeded a third. The smaller model accounted for 38%, while the electrified wagon reached 35%. Unless we\u2019re reading too much into it, Frank van Meel may have hinted that the lineup could expand beyond these two models:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"7\">\n<p>\u201cThe Touring demand is now increasing, and we\u2019re really happy with that. We\u2019ll see where that leads us in the future as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If a third M-branded wagon is on the way, there\u2019s really only one plausible candidate as the base model: the i3 Touring (\u201cNA1\u201d). BMW has already teased the standard electric wagon ahead of a possible 2027 market launch. We\u2019ve been reporting on the sporty version\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2023\/09\/15\/bmw-codenames-neue-klasse-m3-touring-ix3m-ix4m\/\">\u201cZA1\u201d codename<\/a> for nearly three years, but we\u2019re still waiting for official confirmation. If approved, it could arrive in late 2028, roughly a year after the electric M3 Sedan (\u201cZA0\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, BMW is preparing a mid-cycle facelift for the M5 Touring, scheduled for release in 2027. Sadly, the M3 Touring is reportedly less than a year away from retirement, with production expected to end next February. On a more positive note, BMW M has confirmed a new M3 Sedan (\u201cG84\u201d) with an inline-six engine. However, it has yet to commit to the more practical body style. In fact, it\u2019s still unclear whether there will even be a 3 Series Touring (\u201cG51\u201d) with combustion engines.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, the surge in demand for wagons will convince decision-makers to expand the Touring lineup. Ideally, a broader availability wouldn\u2019t hurt either. On that note, BMW is already open to bringing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2026\/03\/18\/bmw-considering-new-3-series-touring-for-us\/\">i3 Touring to the United States<\/a>.
