One-offs typically rely on the underpinnings of an existing model, since developing everything from scratch would incur enormous costs. With the coupe stretching to 5.2 meters, or nearly 205 inches, it was clear this wasn\u2019t a reskinned 4 Series or 8 Series Coupe.<\/p>\n<p>Although the concept\u2019s interior gives off a strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2026\/05\/14\/bmw-7-series-2026-cannes-film-festival\/\">2027 7 Series<\/a> vibe, the Vision BMW ALPINA is not a coupe-ified G70. In an interview with the media at the Concorso d\u2019Eleganza Villa d\u2019Este over the weekend, the BMW Group\u2019s Head of Design revealed the identity of the donor vehicle. To our surprise, the gorgeous GT is actually based on a car the company no longer sells.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian van Hooydonk announced the Vision design study was built on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2023\/08\/14\/bmw-8-series-gran-coupe-in-sepia-violet\/\">8 Series Gran Coupe<\/a> chassis. Although the two-door 8 Series Coupe might seem like a more natural fit, the four-door body style was deliberately chosen for its longer wheelbase. As a refresher, the G16 measures 3023 millimeters, or 119 inches, between the axles. That allows for the spacious rear seats you\u2019d expect in a luxury grand tourer. Compared to the Coupe and Convertible, the Gran Coupe\u2019s wheelbase is 201 mm, or almost 8 inches, longer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-scaled.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-513440\" title=\"CONCORSO 53\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-830x553.jpg\" alt=\"CONCORSO 53\" width=\"830\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-830x553.jpg 830w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/cdn.bmwblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/concorso-53-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>An 8 Series-Based ALPINA Coupe Can\u2019t Happen<\/h2>\n<p>Even if BMW were to turn the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2026\/05\/18\/vision-bmw-alpina-new-real-images\/\">Vision<\/a> into reality, the company would have to use a different base car. Why? The 8 Series has gone out of production. Consequently, a stately coupe can\u2019t be built on the bones of a now-discontinued vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>As for why BMW chose a sumptuous four-seat coupe body style, the decision stemmed from a desire to show how ALPINA can complement the core lineup with different products. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2025\/12\/11\/adrian-van-hooydonk-bmw-camouflage-secrets\/\">Adrian van Hooydonk<\/a> explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>\u201cWe deliberately chose to take something that is not already in existence, because we want to make clear this is a new chapter for ALPINA, and it\u2019s not a thin layer on the BMW. We want to set the brand on its own course within the BMW Group. There\u2019s no better way of documenting that than to do a standalone vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The concept also portrays how familiar design cues carry over into the new era. Retro touches like the deco lines, elliptical quad exhaust, and 20-spoke wheel design are all set to continue. The same goes for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2026\/01\/02\/bmw-alpina-standalone-brand-2026\/\">ALPINA wordmark<\/a> as a machined, polished metal element in the lower bumper. Additionally, BMW will offer that extra layer of customization that the Buchloe-pampered cars were known for.<\/p>\n<p>ALPINA\u2019s reset under the BMW Group will start at the top and gradually trickle down through the range. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmwblog.com\/2026\/05\/15\/bmw-confirms-alpina-7-series-2027\/\">7 Series<\/a> will get the ball rolling next year, followed most likely by a second-generation X7 later this decade.
