Three times during that 10-year period, the gearheads at SVT produced a track-rat Cobra R. The last, in 2000, was an ultra-hardcore beast with a 5.4-liter modular V8 cranking out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mustangspecs.com\/2000-ford-mustang-cobra-r\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">a likely underrated 385 horsepower and 385 pound-feet<\/a> of torque \u2014 this was a year before the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/corvette\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Chevy Corvette<\/a> Z06 showed up with 385 hp and 380 lb-ft. John Coletti, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Ford&#8217;s<\/a> Special Vehicle Engineering manager at the time, said of this model, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/reviews\/ford-svt-mustang-cobra-r\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Everything we&#8217;ve done on this car<\/a> is a notch or several notches above anything we&#8217;ve done before,&#8221; and, &#8220;This 2000 Cobra R pushes the performance envelope far beyond the capabilities of any previous Mustang.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of this Cobra SVT R&#8217;s magic tricks was its intake manifold, a top hat standing high enough to require an even bigger power bulge in the hood. A member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svtperformance.com\/threads\/unearthed-ultra-rare-prototype-2000-cobra-r-intake-manifolds-discovered.1197340\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\"><em>SVT Performance<\/em> forum came across<\/a> a prototype manifold, one Ford engineers built in order to test the production unit. Somehow, the component ended up in a box in someone&#8217;s basement, and that certain someone forgot about it. Just like the grandma who never mentions she <a href=\"https:\/\/autos.yahoo.com\/grandma-stashed-lamborghini-countach-160000922.html\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">has a Lamborghini Countach and a Ferrari 308 in her garage<\/a>, we&#8217;re still not sure how such things happen, but happen they do.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/2200x650\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/10\/29111901\/SVT-Cobra-R.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, a note on the side of the intake reads &#8220;Extrude honed,&#8221; a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XCFKV_qRr54\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">process that squeezes an abrasive material<\/a> through a channel to leave a smooth surface. Ford would have tried this process out in order to prevent a repeat of <a href=\"https:\/\/auto.howstuffworks.com\/1999-2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-ford-mustang4.htm\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">what happened on the 1999 Mustang SVT Cobra<\/a>, when leftover aluminum flash in the headers robbed the engine of up to 54 horsepower. The prototype also shows custom work done on the intake to create a larger plenum with improved airflow.<\/p>\n<p>The 2000 Mustang Cobra SVT R was the fastest Mustang ever at the time, and this intake helped make that possible. Ford only made 300 examples of the coupe, priced them at about $55,000 (nearly $88,000 in today&#8217;s dollars), and sold them all immediately. Among a generation of unloved Mustangs with New <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/edge\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Edge<\/a> styling, the 2000 Cobra SVT R has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.classic.com\/m\/ford\/mustang\/4th-gen\/svt-cobra-r-2000\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">crossed the six-figure mark at auctions<\/a> more than once this year. The manifold might not be enough for a museum exhibit, but it deserves a home more impressive than a box in a basement.
