It wasn&#8217;t the Buick with the biggest price tag that year\u2014 those honors went to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2006-Buick-Terraza\/expert-review\/pg-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the Terraza minivan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2006-Buick-Rainier\/expert-review\/pg-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Rainier SUV<\/a>\u2014 but it became the flag-bearer for a bloodline of <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Buick\/1937_Buick\/1937_Buick_Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">cushy, prestigious Buick sedans<\/a> that stretched all the way back to <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Buick\/1914_Buick\/1914_Buick_Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the early days of the American auto industry<\/a>. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buick\/lucerne\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Lucerne<\/a> sales for the 2006 and 2007 model years went pretty well, and now enough time has passed that some of these <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-shows\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">cars are showing<\/a> up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the self-service car boneyards I frequent<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a first-year example with the optional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2008\/01\/03\/gm-cancels-new-dohc-v8-engine-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Northstar V8 engine<\/a>, found in a Northern California yard last summer.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/10\/22120426\/02-2006-Buick-Lucerne-in-California-junkyard-photograph-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Plenty of American cars have been named after cities in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/06\/junkyard-find-1979-chevrolet-monza-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Italy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a37237409\/1986-pontiac-parisienne-brougham-is-junkyard-treasure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">France<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/10\/11\/junkyard-gem-1982-ford-granada-l-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Spain<\/a>, but the Lucerne is the only one I can think of that bears the name of a\u00a0<em>Swiss<\/em> city (to be fair, the entire <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Chevrolet<\/a> Division <a href=\"https:\/\/media.chevrolet.com\/media\/me\/en\/chevrolet\/news.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/me\/en\/0000\/Chevrolet\/00_00_Louis_Chevrolet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">is named after a Swiss man<\/a>, so Switzerland didn&#8217;t really get shortchanged by The General in the naming department). CXL was the Lucerne&#8217;s mid-grade trim level, sandwiched between the CX and CSX.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/10\/22120437\/14-2006-Buick-Lucerne-in-California-junkyard-photograph-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The high-zoot Lucerne CSX got the 4.6-liter Northstar as standard equipment, but this quad-cam V8 and its 279 horses cost extra on the CXL. The base engine for the CX and CXL was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1832656\/cut-down-engine-week-buick-v6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">the good old 3.8-liter pushrod Buick V6<\/a>, rated at 197 horsepower. No US-market 2006 Buick could be purchased new with a manual transmission; this car has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a35412914\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-with-a-four-speed-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">four-speed automatic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/10\/22120432\/08-2006-Buick-Lucerne-in-California-junkyard-photograph-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2013\/09\/01\/angel-eye-headlamps-buick-ventiports-styling-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">a Buick tradition<\/a> stretching back to <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Buick\/1949_Buick\/1949%20Buick%20Foldout\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">the late 1940s<\/a>, this car boasts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/12\/02\/junkyard-gem-1964-buick-special-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">flashy<\/a> &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/10\/26\/junkyard-gem-1973-buick-lesabre-custom-hardtop-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Ventiports<\/a>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/12\/21\/junkyard-gem-1978-buick-electra-225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">on the fenders<\/a>. So, when you&#8217;re crawling around your local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewepullet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">Ewe Pullet<\/a> and looking for Northstars, seek out the Lucernes with the four-hole Ventiports.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/10\/22120429\/06-2006-Buick-Lucerne-in-California-junkyard-photograph-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Leather-appointed&#8221; power bucket seats and &#8220;wood-toned&#8221; trim were standard on the CXL, as well as an MP3-capable CD player with six speakers. By 2006, most American vehicle shoppers seeking something big and luxurious chose <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">trucks<\/a> and truck-like machines, but the market still supported quite a few sedan models such as the Lucerne.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/10\/22120434\/09-2006-Buick-Lucerne-in-California-junkyard-photograph-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Most US-market <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\">GM<\/a> vehicles got these little square &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_of_Excellence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">Mark of Excellence<\/a>&#8221; fender badges during the late 2000s.
