Canada’s EV Affordability Program: What You Need to Know – Plug’n Drive Canada

The federal government has officially launched the EV Affordability Program (EVAP), making it more affordable for Canadians to buy or lease a new electric vehicle.

If you’re considering making the switch to electric, here’s a simple breakdown of how the program works and whether you may qualify.

How Much Is the Incentive?

Eligible Canadians can receive:
• Up to $5,000 off a new battery-electric vehicle (BEV)
• Up to $2,500 off a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)

The incentive applies at the time of purchase or lease.

Who Is Eligible?

To qualify for the incentive:

  • The vehicle must be new (not used).
  • The final transaction value must be $50,000 or less.
  • There is no price cap for EVs manufactured in Canada.
  • The vehicle must be built in Canada or in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada.
  • Only certain makes, models, trims, and model years (2024–2026) qualify.

Because eligibility depends on specific trims and configurations, it’s important to check the official vehicle list before purchasing.

What Counts Toward the $50,000 Price Cap?

The “final transaction value” includes:

  • The base vehicle price
  • Optional features and packages
  • Accessories included at delivery (such as a roof rack)
  • Dealer or manufacturer fees

It does not include:

  • Taxes
  • Government rebates or incentives
  • Freight and pre-delivery inspection (PDI)
  • Extended warranties
  • Winter tires
  • Home charging equipment
  • Financing or lease costs
  • Down payments or trade-ins

What This Means for You

The EV Affordability Program is designed to reduce upfront costs and make electric vehicles more accessible to Canadians. However, because eligibility rules can vary by model and trim, it’s important to confirm that the specific vehicle you’re considering qualifies before finalizing your purchase or lease.
